In this paper, I commemorate the 50th anniversary of Eduardo Galeano’s classic work, The Open Veins of Latin America, exploring its profound convergence with Marxist Dependency Theory. I highlight how Galeano’s masterwork popularized the core principles of dependentism through a vivid, passionate synthesis of history, political economy, and literature. I analyze the book’s alignment with Ruy Mauro Marini’s radical perspective, which rejected national capitalist stages in favor of a direct transition to socialism. Furthermore, I demonstrate the enduring validity of Galeano’s insights in the 21st century, as Latin America continues to suffer from extractivist primarization, resource plunder, foreign debt burdens, and labor precarity. I conclude that Galeano’s text remains an indispensable emblem of anti-imperialist resistance and social emancipation for new generations.
